The Importance of Being Earnest (September 2019)
The Little Theatre is a predominantly voluntary run organization that has established itself as home of the Leicester Drama Society (LDS), having run for nearly a hundred years in the heart of Leicester’s city centre. Proudly boasting patrons such as Sir Anthony Hopkins, Richard Cadell and Sooty andGervase Phinn – and with the former Honorary Life President being the Late Lord Richard Attenborough (who started his acting career at The Little Theatre) – the society produces twelve main house shows each year, and a consistently popular pantomime, performed in the 350 seat auditorium to an annual average 25,000 plus audience members. As well as Lord Attenborough, Joe Orton was also an alumnus of the Society.
The LDS aims to provide a high quality of theatre to our Leicestershire audience, in a diverse programme of shows, ranging from Shakespeare to musicals, drama to comedy, contemporary theatre to the classics… with few paid members of staff, the theatre is run by an elected board of trustees, supported by committees dealing with the facilities, membership, marketing and productions. Membership is open to anyone interested in the theatre, and while we encourage all members to get involved both on and back stage, we also have many members who are simply supporters and regular audience members.
These are challenging times for the theatre, with its first closure in its history caused in 2020 by COVID-19, and financial challenges posed and a result. Spring 2021 saw the theatre re-open with a new season of shows, and we were happy to welcome patrons back to our theatre after a period of enforced absence.
